My then oncologist said I have had MM since 2012. I guess I'm lucky , right? I rarely had blood tests before the cancer was found, so the only answer I could come up with is that he had blood tests from 2011's accident I had? Anyway, I should just be grateful my odds are a bit better then some. The whole thing is a mystery to me and I'm always " wondering".

I relate to this. I’ve been wondering since 2024 when I was diagnosed with small during multiple myeloma, my oncologist never has any information for me. Never seems to be able to answer my questions. Besides everything‘s fine for now. When I would do my three month blood exam I finally have moved on to my second oncologist so far he started from scratch with a bone marrow, biopsy blood test and imaging. I like this guy. I understand him and he seems to hear me we’ll see how it goes at my follow up in the meantime, I’m right there with you wondering. I hope you’re having a beautiful day. ☀️

Kathryn,
I was feeling “off” in 2011 and got a Physical and blood tests. The doctor said the blood tests were normal, but the next year I was still not feeling well and went back. I realized I didn’t have a copy of the blood tests for the previous year to compare, and asked for all records. It turns out my White Blood cells were below normal. My Hematologist thinks I had MGUS back then. Ive kept all my blood tests records since then, and can see how the numbers have changed, for better or worse.

Your instinct about the 2011 accident bloodwork is actually quite logical. Blood tests taken for unrelated reasons are sometimes how early myeloma markers get spotted in hindsight. It's not uncommon for myeloma to exist in an earlier, slower-moving stage before it becomes diagnosable as active MM. There are earlier stages that can precede a full myeloma diagnosis, and in some cases people carry these for years without knowing. A few things that can show up in routine bloodwork that might flag something early include:

- Elevated M protein (myeloma protein) levels
- Abnormal free light chain results
- Changes in other blood cell counts

These markers don't always cause symptoms, which is why myeloma can quietly exist before it's formally caught. As for feeling grateful — that's a beautiful perspective, and it sounds hard-earned. But it's also okay to hold both gratitude *and* the "wondering" at the same time. You don't have to choose just one. 💙

Talking openly with your current oncologist about the timeline might help bring some peace to those lingering questions.

George, HI!
if I had blood tests in the hospital, I don't remember. My best friend drove from N.H to WA to pick me up and I recuperated in N.H. I don't think , but not sure if I had any blood tests; too many pain pills for a while is probably why my memory has lapses. Medical practitioners have a way to find out things, for sure though. That was a long time ago and in a far away place...so to speak. I just took the oncologist at his word...at the time and at this point, I guess it really doesn't matter.
I've had blood tests very recently ( last week ). Three results are in and there really isn't much of a change I have 3 more results still coming; hopefully this week. Two of which I'm very interested to know about; One of those is a scan which hasn't been scheduled yet. Anyway, we all have " Something", huh? I am but one story.
I'm still standing.......yeah yeah yeah
How are you doing, George?? Ok, I hope....or Better.🤞

Kathryn, what did your blood tests show after your accident? Any reason to suspect MM at that time? Usually anemia is a clue.
