What do the changes in your husband's IgG and IgM levels mean after starting treatment?
The significant drop in IgG from 4664 to 1263 mg/dL after just 2.5 weeks is actually a positive sign. This suggests the treatment is working to reduce the abnormal protein (M protein) that myeloma cells produce.
When myeloma treatment is effective, you'll typically see M protein levels fall. Doctors regularly check these levels to monitor how active the disease is and whether therapy is working. The dramatic decrease in IgG indicates the treatment is targeting the myeloma cells successfully.
The IgM level of 6 mg/dL is quite low, but IgM isn't typically the main antibody involved in most myeloma cases. IgG and IgA are the more common types associated with myeloma.
It's important to discuss these results with your husband's oncology team. They can:
- Confirm whether the IgG drop indicates good response to treatment
- Explain what the low IgM means for his specific case
- Monitor for any signs that normal antibody production is being affected
- Adjust the treatment plan if needed
The early response looks encouraging, but his medical team will continue tracking these levels throughout treatment to ensure he's responding well.
