I had a partial post-vitreous detachment. My eye pressure continues to increase. My eyes are dry and red all the time, and crusty. My Retina Specialist said the high corticosteroids could have done it, but I’m wondering if SMM is involved too.

I had no idea myeloma could affect our eyes this way. I have had to stop taking Unison and Benadryl for sleep. They seem to increase my eye pressures. It's very important that we see the eye doctor at least yearly.

Eye problems with myeloma are more common than many people realize, and it's great that you're asking about this. While papilledema specifically (swelling of the optic nerve) isn't the most frequently discussed eye complication, myeloma can affect the eyes in several ways that could be connected.
Here are some ways myeloma can impact vision and eye health:
- Hyperviscosity – when abnormal proteins thicken the blood, it can restrict blood flow to the eyes, causing vision changes or pressure-related issues
- Plasmacytomas – myeloma cells can form tumors near or behind the eyes, potentially affecting the optic nerve
- Blood clots – myeloma raises clot risk, which can affect blood vessels leading to the eyes
- Treatment side effects – many myeloma medications can cause eye-related side effects
- Increased infection risk – weakened immunity can lead to eye infections One MyMyelomaTeam member actually discovered their myeloma diagnosis after noticing shadow vision and seeing multiple eye specialists.
It's really important to report any eye changes to your oncologist promptly, and to keep up with regular appointments with an ophthalmologist who is aware of your myeloma diagnosis. They can work together to figure out the exact cause and best course of action.
