Members responded warmly to the question about having both Multiple Myeloma and Multiple Sclerosis, confirming that it is indeed possible to have both conditions at the same time. Several members shared personal stories, including one who was diagnosed with MS in 1997 and later with MM in 2024, noting that her vision actually improved after a stem cell transplant, and another who is managing MM alongside multiple other serious conditions and is still doing well eight years past a grim prognosis. A recurring theme was the overlap in symptoms between MM and MS, the difficulty of getting clear answers from doctors, and the importance of leaning on faith, community support, and personal resilience.

I was diagnosed with MS in 1997. I gave myself shots once a week for 9 years. They were extremely expensive, I felt like I had the body aches that you get with the flu the day after the shot each week, and the interferon drug didn't help everyone. Due to MS being an individual experience for everyone there was no way of knowing whether the shot helped or if I would have been the same without it. I finally stopped taking it. Fortunately I do not experience many problems from MS. I am not the typical case. My previous neurologist said "you have a very boring case of MS". I have minimal brain lesions with only small additions with each brain MRI every few years. If I had not had a shoulder injury that wouldn't resolve I probably would have never been diagnosed. I was given a cervical MRI to investigate it and the technician went down a bit into my thoracic area which showed a spot in my spinal cord. That spot got me directed from the neurosurgeon to a neurologist. He ordered a spinal tap and a brain MRI which led to my diagnosis. The spot in my spinal cord eventually went away. In retrospect I had experienced symptoms of MS that would come and go but individually my primary care doctor wasn't overly concerned about or was able to explain away as probably something else. I am so blessed to have a boring case. I wasn't diagnosed with MM until Jan 2024. It was assumed late 2023 but I was going through all the different test to make it official. I had a SCT in the summer of 2024. They actually do SCT for very progressive forms of MS now to reset the immune system in the hopes that it will stop attacking the body. My eye sight improved after the SCT. The eyes are a very common area for MS to appear.

I really don't know.....hoping not. My balance, my gait, constant malaise/brain fog, low immunity etc......I just don't know. I've mentioned it to my Primary.......crickets. I''m trying to explain my side effects from MM and I saw this MS thing. ......maybe a neurologist; well not available anywhere near here.....Anyway, the search continues.

I guess it depends on who or what specialist you speak to.. I have many MS symptoms but it seems to be a ...comorbity that is as mysterious as MM. It certainly is debilitating, but not a cancer.

Hi Kathyrn, MS is bad, I sure hope you don't have it. From what I understand it is much more degenerative than MM.
