Many people with myeloma have questions about the RSV vaccine β€” and it's a great one to bring up with your oncology team. The good news is that for people with myeloma, vaccination is generally encouraged rather than discouraged.

Because myeloma can weaken the immune system and some treatments can suppress it further, the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) actually recommends RSV vaccination starting at age 18 for people with weakened immune systems β€” earlier than the general population. There are three FDA-approved RSV vaccines available for adults:

- Arexvy (GSK) β€” protein-based with an adjuvant
- mResvia (Moderna) β€” mRNA-based
- Abrysvo (Pfizer) β€” protein-based without an adjuvant

All three are approved for people ages 18–59 at increased risk, which includes those with myeloma. A few important things to keep in mind:

- The RSV vaccine is not given every year like the flu shot
- Even if your immune response is weaker due to myeloma or treatment, the vaccine can still offer meaningful protection
- Timing matters β€” your oncology team can advise on the best time to get vaccinated around your treatment schedule

It's worth asking your doctor which RSV vaccine is right for you and when to get it.
