Great question! MGUS itself is a precancerous condition that often causes no symptoms, so many people with MGUS feel well enough to continue their normal activities, including running.
That said, there are some important things to keep in mind before lacing up those running shoes:
- Bone health — MGUS can affect bone density, so there's a risk of fractures with high-impact activities like running
- Nerve symptoms — Some people with MGUS develop peripheral neuropathy (numbness, tingling, or weakness), which could affect balance and coordination while running
- Fatigue — If tiredness is a symptom, it may impact endurance
The best step is to check in with your care team before continuing or starting a running routine. They can assess your bone health, M protein levels, and any nerve-related symptoms to give personalized guidance.
Staying active is generally encouraged for overall wellbeing, but safety comes first — especially when bones and nerves may be involved.
