Jessica,
I am Smoldering with 10% bad plasma cells. Then why are my white blood cells and red blood cells below normal, if I don’t have MM? My white blood cells have been below normal since 2011. I don’t think they have all the answers yet. 10% can’t crowd out that many cells.

I’ve seen firsthand how MM drugs, like Pomalyst, can suppress normal bone marrow cell production. When you go off of treatment these cells tend to recover. But I’ve also read during active MM, abnormal production in the bone marrow can also limit and lower the production of healthy, useful cells as well.
Myeloma directly affects blood cell production, which is why low platelet and white blood cell counts are so common. Here's what's happening inside the body:
- Myeloma causes cancerous plasma cells to multiply rapidly in the bone marrow
- These abnormal cells crowd out the healthy cells that would normally produce Show Full Answer
My brother Lance has had low white blood cell counts, as well as the red and platelets for 3 yrs. now - twice he had chemo stopped, due to being in the hospital. We just got results from yest. lab work and all 3 are still lower than normal range, as as but he has been doing great this month - we've been able to do a lot of day trips, live performances. Sometimes, we think it is because of his special needs diagnosis of
dev . challenged - it is such a miracle that he keeps going on and on! Chemo has been given to him every month, this is all that can be done, would not do well with a stem cell transplant or any other intervention. So, it is one day at a time, as long as all counts stay low like they are, but most days, he is just like he was before MM, except for the weight loss..
