To be eligible for CAR-T cell therapy, the general requirements are:
- Myeloma must be relapsed (came back) or refractory (resistant to treatment)
- At least four prior treatments must have been tried, including drugs from these categories:
- Immunomodulatory drugs
- Proteasome inhibitors
- Anti-CD38 monoclonal antibodies
A prior stem cell transplant is not listed as a requirement for CAR-T eligibility. There are two FDA-approved CAR-T therapies for myeloma — Abecma (ide-cel) and Carvykti — both targeting a protein called BCMA found on myeloma cells. Some people have achieved deep, long-lasting remissions with these treatments, even after many prior therapies.
It's always worth having a detailed conversation with a myeloma specialist to see if CAR-T could be a fit based on your specific treatment history.
