To relieve pain I use a heating pad daily. Not sure if I’m helping myself or not? Any advice?

Members shared many ways to manage back pain from fractures related to multiple myeloma, with heating pads being the most popular go-to relief, often used on low settings for short sessions and sometimes alternated with cold packs. Several members also mentioned helpful options like lidocaine patches, Voltaren gel, hemp cream, Shiatsu massagers, acupuncture, trigger point injections, and procedures like kyphoplasty for those who qualify. A recurring theme was the value of physical therapy for building strength and confidence, along with the importance of finding what works best for each person.

@A MyMyelomaTeam Member I highly recommend PT! I did it once a week for six months and it did help. I think one of the biggest benefits I gained was renewed confidence in my body. It sounds kinda crazy but I realize now that after finding out I had cancer I felt like my body had let me down and I had sort of given up and didn’t feel like I could push myself. PT helped me gain confidence and realize I could push my body. I’ve gained strength and lost 30 pounds. I exercise daily now and while I still have pain I’m more confident in what my body can do and it helps my mental state which I think all cancer patients can benefit from. I hope you also benefit from PT. Please keep us posted.

Jeff,
When my back hurts I get in bed and recline until the pain goes away. I can see in your case, this would not work. What works for me with bones is to try and heal them with supplements. I take MRM Bone Maximizer III (1400 mg Calcium & Magnesium) with extra D3 and K2, vitamin C, E complex and A. I avoid salty foods which take calcium out of the bones. I also avoid caffience and carbonation. Massage and a heating pad helped my mom with a tumor on her spine. She also had a fenantyl patch. Be careful with heating pads. somehow it got turned on high, and when I arrived, there was no skin on her leg.

Hi Jeff! I also use a heating pad frequently to relieve my back pain. So you're in good company! Lol. Try to avoid opioids as long as possible bc it is a neverending merry go round. But sometimes that is all you can turn to bc the back pain impedes your daily functions. I recently bought a large ice pad (on Amazon) so I can alternate between the two. It's certainly not as calming as the heating pad. I will let you know if this hot and cold therapy works! Take care!

I use my heating pad in the winter. Works for me. In the summer I use a gel cream or Tylenol. The cream works well but is hard for me to rub into my back.

@KathleenGuillaum KG, I quit morning coffee cold turkey. More for insomnia reasons, occasionally I have tea (not green), don't miss the rush. However, I do miss my espresso after dinner, but that stuff's like rocket fuel.
