When I was first diagnosed, and before I started induction treatments, I was told that I should go to get my teeth examined and have any repairs. I ended up getting a tooth pulled.
The dentist said to use a soft bristled brush and not to floss. I added to that advice. I brush my teeth with coconut oil. It is non microbial and I haven't had any mouth infections. I also use the same oil as a sort of mouthwash. It melts and saliva helps the swishing action.

I was told by my Rheumatologist to start Zometa in 2019. I had severe osteoporosis. They call these drugs “bone stregtheners” but they are not. They do not build new bone. MM is constantly blocking new bone from being built and activating bone destruction. I decided I did not want brittle bones after a couple of years. You can only be on it for a couple of years. Too many on this site talk about their jaw bone breaking and sticking out, and having to wait weeks to be seen by an oral surgeon. That sounds like a nightmare to me. I did some research and decided to take supplements. I take calcium & Magnesium (1200-1400 mg MRM Bone Maximizer III) with extra D3 to absorb it, K2 which tells the calcium to go to the bones, instead of clogging arteries, and Vitamins C, A and E complex, which all compliments the calcium. Vitamins are not cheap, but without them I am in terrible pain. No more cramping feet or legs either. Bonus! Also, you have to stop taking Zometa months ahead of time to have dental work. That’s not convenient.

My oncologist wants to start me on a bone strengthening injection, and oddly that same med weakens the jawbone. So I was instructed to see a dentist for any extraction, work that needs to be done before the Xgeva treatment is started. And of course the dentist found stuff that needs to be done first...😬

Hi William. Yes, you will need to get all major dental work done before you start bisphosphanates. They don't want you to get teeth pulled while on treatment with these drugs. Routine cleanings are okay.

Be sure to ask the Dr. I take zometa for my bones every quarter and my dr warns of dental work before and after the zometa infusion.
