Many of us are improving our health through diet and lifestyle. In this video Dr. Dominic Brandy shares his recent experience with MM and the importance of sleep and stress control.

Dr. Brandy also talks about the effects the loss of a loved one can have on health. I plan to explore avenues I can take in the present to prepare myself mentally for the future should my husband of 41 years leave this life before I do.

This thread was inspired by a video from Dr. Dominic Brandy about managing multiple myeloma through better sleep and stress reduction, and members connected deeply over how grief and caregiving stress can affect disease progression. Several members shared personal experiences of progressing from MGUS to smoldering or active MM following the loss or illness of a loved one, and many offered practical coping strategies including nature walks, knitting, crocheting, sauna use, and guided meditation resources from City of Hope. A recurring theme was that while stress cannot be fully eliminated, finding calming routines and leaning on community support are powerful tools for protecting both mental and physical health.

Totally agree that stress is the cause of many illnesses, not just MM. If possible avoid as much negative stress as possible, taking walks out in nature is a good way, it can also help with sleep.

Hello Everyone,

I recently received an email from "City of Hope". It contain a link to three guided meditation videos to help reduce anxiety, stress, fatigue, restlessness, difficulty sleeping and physical discomfort. I'm going to try it and consider making one of them a part of my regular routine, depending on how things go. The email and link are at the end of this post.

Also, I agree with @A MyMyelomaTeam Member. Walks in nature can be very beneficial for stress control and mental health. Living on acreage, we trial walk several times a week. It is a part of our regular exercise routine. And at the end of my workout, I spend 20 minutes in a 140 degree Fahrenheit sauna, which is very relaxing and stress relieving.

I also enjoy needlework (knitting and crocheting). It is meditative since it involves repetitive motions which can be very calming. I recently saw an article about celebrities who use needlework for stress and anxiety relief. The celebrities are Michelle Obama, Sarah Jessica Parker, Russell Crowe (use knitting for stress relief and anger management control), and Ryan Gosling just to name a few.

Email from City of Hope:

Hi Vicki,

May is Mental Health Awareness Month — and at City of Hope®, we understand that healing the mind and soul is just as important as healing the body.

In these stressful times, we wanted to share three guided meditations from our supportive care team. Following along with one or more of these videos can help reduce anxiety, stress, fatigue, restlessness, difficulty sleeping and physical discomfort.

@A MyMyelomaTeam Member,
I’m so sorry to hear your brother passed away. What he didn’t understand when choosing MAID, was God takes you in His own time. My mom was diagnosed with Stage IV ovarian cancer. She lived another 8 years. The last 4 were with no treatment. No one would have guessed that would happen. The first doctor she went to said, go home and call Hospice, you have 6 months. We were blessed with her presence for years and she witnessed weddings, births and joys she never expected. 72 years of marriage. Never give up on God.🙏🏻🕊️🌈✝️

Hi Kathryn,

Being in nature can have so many positive benefits. I feel that I can enjoy it more if I can sit for a while. After being bedbound for several months and having to learn how to walk again, I am still on the mends, still dealing with some back pain during the walks. I spoke with my husband about putting a couple of benches out there so that I can take a break and fully enjoy my surroundings.

Also, my mother developed dementia when she was in her 70's. She rarely went outside and she didn't take vitamin D supplements. I believe her vitamin D was low and may have contributed to the dementia. I'm 67 yrs old and I want to do everything possible to prevent this from happening to me. So, in-addition to trail walking, I take vitamin D pills everyday.

Last night (Sunday May 24, 2026) we watched the movie "Love again" on the Lifetime network. It was about a woman whose husband was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's. It was very good. I like to see movies that bring awareness to the many different types of diseases and disorders in our society today.

It's good to hear that you are going to spend more time in nature. And with summer just around the corner this is perfect timing since your summers are so short. In July 1987 or 1988 my husband and I went on a 7 day Alaskan cruise. We enjoyed it very much and planned to go again, although it never happened. And now with a compromised immune system, being around a lot of people would not be idea for me. Enjoy your walks. You live in an amazing part of the country.
