Stem cell transplants are a well-known treatment option for myeloma, and many people have gone through the process. One MyMyelomaTeam member shared their experience, noting that things have changed a lot over the years — some transplants are now even done on an outpatient basis, which wasn't always the case.

That same member offered some practical tips from their experience:

- Ask for anti-nausea and anti-diarrhea medication — don't try to tough it out
- Bring entertainment like music, movies, and books (though expect to sleep a lot)
- Be prepared for a special antibacterial diet — no fresh fruits or vegetables unless they have a hard outer skin
- Emotional support matters — isolation can be really tough

For those who do stay in hospital, a typical stay is around two to three weeks. There are two main types of stem cell transplant used in myeloma:

- Autologous — uses your own stem cells, and is the most common type for myeloma
- Allogeneic — uses donor stem cells, carries higher risks, and is used less often today

After a transplant, maintenance medications are usually prescribed for several years to help keep the myeloma under control. It's always worth having a detailed conversation with your doctor about whether a transplant is the right path for you.
