What's causing your diarrhea with myeloma?
Diarrhea can stem from several myeloma-related causes. The disease itself can lead to amyloidosis, where proteins build up in organs and cause digestive issues. Treatment is another common culprit - chemotherapy drugs like Revlimid (lenalidomide) frequently cause diarrhea by affecting how your intestines absorb bile salts.
Revlimid can cause late-onset diarrhea appearing 17-24 months after starting treatment. A MyMyelomaTeam member shared: "I had never-ending diarrhea from Revlimid. So much so, that when it was deemed to be a continued response, my oncologist discontinued it."
Here are strategies that may help:
Dietary changes:
- Well-cooked vegetables
- Peeled canned fruits
- White rice and white bread
- Yogurt
- Lean, skinless meats (baked or broiled)
- Smooth peanut butter
- Cooked eggs with solid whites
Stay hydrated: Drink 8-12 cups of room-temperature water daily. Clear liquids like broth can help replace lost fluids.
Medications: Over-the-counter options like Imodium or prescription bile acid sequestrants may help. One member found success: "My husband takes half an Imodium and one packet of cholestyramine, split into two doses. It does help him."
Always contact your doctor before trying any treatments, as they need to ensure nothing interferes with your myeloma therapy.

I'll take a shot at this Susan.
I believe it started during my stem cell transplant. The whole experience was a nightmare, and I'm not talking about the diarrhea.
But I've had it ever since. I was on revlimid for years after that. I've been off it for a couple years now but still need to be near a bathroom after I eat.
I have one nice meal a day. I have to go usually a few times after that. Then it's not an issue anymore.
My gastroenterologist says it's good that I don't try to stop it with medicine. Let it fly!! Lol
Sorry. Poor self control. 😁
I hope I eased your concerns.
