Judy,
Zometa and other drugs for the bones can cause osteonecrosis (jaw bone death). I would contact your Hematologist/Oncologist and an Oral Surgeon who specializes in cancer.
There may be other causes of pain in the jaw. When I had a heart attack I had terrible jaw pain. There was so much pressure. I think a fractured jaw for bone death would feel different than a vice like feeling. Some drugs do affect the heart like Velcade. TMJ is another.

Christine7, its my husband that has the bone pain in his jaw. We are thinking it might have to do with his treatments. We have mentioned it to the Dr and RN and they seem to think thats what its from.

Hi Judy! Sorry you are having jaw pain. Have you discussed this with your dentist? I've had TMJ for years, long before I was ever diagnosed with MM. The cause is jaw clenching (I'm a nervous sort) and possible teeth grinding at night. You might ask your dentist how your x-rays look and if a jaw splint might be needed. I have worn one at night for years and rarely have jaw pain. MM is stressful - maybe this is a stress related event? Take care! 🤗

How can you relieve jaw pain?

While the search results don't specifically address jaw pain relief, some general pain management strategies used for myeloma-related discomfort might help:

Pain Relief Options:
- Talk to your doctor about appropriate pain medications
- Apply heating pads or ice packs for temporary relief
- Try gentle massage to the affected area

Complementary Approaches:
- Acupuncture or acupressure
- Meditation and breathing exercises to help manage pain
- Physical therapy if recommended by your doctor

Important Considerations:

Don't take over-the-counter pain relievers like NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen) without consulting your oncology team first. These can interfere with myeloma treatments or other medications.

Since jaw pain can have various causes related to myeloma (such as bone involvement or treatment side effects), it's essential to discuss this symptom with your doctor. They can determine the underlying cause and recommend the most appropriate treatment for your specific situation.
