Hi Joan - I had a stem cell transplant in 2017, and with a maintenance drug (Revlimid) had good results for 4 years! That's good stuff, and I am very grateful. Hope you have great results too! ♥️
That being said, I recommend contacting your ocology team about the school event. I tend to err or the side of caution, and children are little Petri dishes when it comes to germs, and this will probably be an enclosed space. Maybe plan a special, outside event with your granddaughter for the day instead? (with doctor approval) There is an emotional component to this too. You want to keep your outlook positive during recovery.
Final thoughts - everyone's immune system and counts react differently. My oncologist was stunned how quickly my white cell count bounced back after transplant. Yours may do the same. This will be a journey - take it one step at a time.

Are you eligible for CAR-T? That may be the better way to go with less side effects and a much shorter recovery period. If not, why rush into SCT when the MM can be controlled with routine meds?

Normally I would say yes, but in this case, no. During that time of year, all the kids are snotting and coughing. A mask is not going to help your husband and he’s going to bring it back to you. It will take months to years to get your immune system back. Some patients never get theirs back to normal. In most people SCT fails in 2 years or less. Are you sure your treatment is not working? Of course, this all depends on whether you are high risk and you have tried everything else.

His transplant team will have access to his bloodwork which guides those decisions. I was a teacher and just began treatment in May and because of very risk genetics I am also having a stem cell transplant and post a 2nd one. My team is preparing for a transplant in the fall. I meet tomorrow to discuss with transplant team what all of this means and to prepare. I’m one to err on the side of caution and I retired because I am a special ed teacher and didn’t want to risk the fall illnesses. This is already such a difficult journey I do everything to prevent getting sick. Best of luck!
