Hi. Acyclovir should be continued if you have not had your immunizations as yet. As it takes a year or more b4 you can have some vaccines redone, they will keep you on it. The MMR and Zostavax shingles vaccines are live vaccines, and your immune system must be restored prior to taking them. The Shingrix shingles is not a live vaccine, however your doctor may be suggesting acyclovir until all vaccines are complete. Worth asking about.
However, anything to prevent shingles is absolutely worth it! My uncle had it in his eye and almost lost his vision. My ex had it along his back, and even a loose button up shirt was pure agony! I had acyclovir until I could redo my vaccines with no side effects at all.

I took Acyclovir during my initial chemo treatments and then it was prescribed again following my STC, but once I had my Shingrex vaccines, I was told that I didn't need to take it anymore.

It is an antiviral. I used to catch everything and now I don’t. I also get cold sores and it helps with that too.

I took acyclovir once a day for just more than 4 years while on darzalex faspro. Then I was off from sept 2024 until Feb 2025. I just restarted it twice a day mar 10th after my CAR-T cell infusion for one year. I’ve had a mild shingles infection, the first shingles vaccine and the shingrix vaccines. Best to be protected.

It is recommended by most myeloma specialists to continue on antivirals while taking myeloma therapy, even if we have had the Shingrix shots. Please discuss with your doctor. 🥰
