Dental Cleaning
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

My partner needs to get a dental cleaning. No fillings or other things at this point.
Is it all right if he just gets the cleaning?
I know that if any kind of bone involvement is needed it would have to be a special procedure.

My Oncologist/Hematologist let me get a tooth pulled last winter. My teeth are hard to pull and you would never know I had myeloma as it was true to form a jackhammer and chisel.
About a week later it got infected and I needed antibiotics. It healed fairly quick.

Yes, it's okay to get routine dental cleanings during myeloma treatment😉

Dental cleaning is very important. After I had my stem cell transplant between my dentist and oncologist, I was put on cleaning every 4 mos. I've had some minor and major problems with my teeth since transplant, but because of the rigid schedule I think we have it under control. Stem Cell Transplant was in September of 2023. Just celebrated my 3rd rebirthday. We took a cruise!

Cleanings are not usually a problem unless platelets are low. As long as your dentist is aware of the presence of MM. Extractions are another matter, and your dentist should be in touch with your MM doc for any work that involves bones in your jaw.

After my chemo my teeth took a hit. I ended up with 17 bad teeth some cavities some would need root canal. I said I couldn’t afford to pay to have all those repairs. I am not sure what happened to my teeth. I had my teeth cleaned before I did my chemo I had one cavity the dentist told me he would fill it after my chemo was done. All I do know is my mouth got so sore I could hardly stand to brush my teeth. I ended up having to have all my teeth pulled. Thank God all went well I didn’t get infection or anything. I had a very hard time finding someone to pull my teeth because I had been getting Zometa .
