Back Pain
I had my SCT July 14, 2022 and thanks be to God I’m in remission. I started my maintenance chemo and Zometa on November 28. I had 9 compression fractures repaired with kyphoplasty. I’m now having more back pain, especially when standing and sitting. I went to see my spine doctor yesterday. He recommended another MRI. I hope it’s not another compression fracture. I was thinking could it be a side effect of the Zometa? Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Thank you, my shipmates.
Reply about back pain from Sunny... I started taking Zometa in the beginning of my treatment. It did cause back pain, so the
doctor switched me of to pamidronate,,Aredia..I liked that much better. The only thing it is an infusion that takes
two hours. I didnt mind as I watched TV at the infusion center, or played games on the computer. I did not feel pain after switching to Aredia. I had this for two years, and I think that it did help my bones. I notice that I feel good on
days that I dont do a lot cleaning, lifting some things, doing to much laundry, or bending a lot. I recently bent all the way down to water the Christmas tree...never again. There are devices that will help water your tree, its a pipe with a funnel on top. I have to stop trying to do all these things. I recently got a cleaning lady to help every few weeks. I have to understand that I had a lot of fractures in my back, caused by this disease. Ive had a stem cell transpland and I am in remission. I have had quite a few Mri tests, but back does not have new fractures or anything else going on. I know from what I have read, that our fractures do not really heal the way they would if we didnt have mulltiple myeloma. It doesnt heal the same way. I try to think of exercises that will not really hurt my back, walking, and simple movements. I really promise myself that I will not pick up heavy things, crawl under the Christmas tree to try to water it, or do a lot of bending. When I follow this, my pain goes away. Then I start up again when my back feels good! I use lidocaine patches on my back. I still take oxocodone extended release, which does help. Sunny

When I'm severely constipated, I often have back pain.
In 2015 June I had my R knee replacement then in on December 29 I was wondering on snow removal, fell landed on a shovel Handel on broke my left leg which to inserting a rod in my femur. Then in July of 2016 I had spinal fusion surgery L34/45 on both sides to repair spinal stenosis. Fell in July of 2021 broke my right hurmerous and crushed the shoulder that’s when they found the multiple Myeloma. So bone and back pain are a constant to different degrees. Sitting is pain free, so driving, play bass in my band or anything else I can do sitting is no problem. I still am able to lift fairly heavy things, but can’t carry and walk with much weight at all.
I’m in remission and in a clinical trial so things are going ok, but the Dr tells me I have a high threshold for pain, so Tramadol 3 times a day works most days and I have Oxie for free days it doesn’t. My treatment is 10mg of Revlimid daily with multi vitamins and over the counter supplements.
A long story to say what helps me, so you just need to find the combination that helps you the best.
Prayer for you and all who are on this journey of a new way of life.

For those in Complete Remission as per the clonoSEQ testing at 10 -6 (no cancer per million cells), see if your Doc will place you on Monitoring without any MM Meds. If so, you’ll be able to stop Zometa, Xgeva and similar. Then you’re body will return to its normal bone reconstruction. This should help reduce back pain and reduce fatigue (has for me). Tell your Doc about MRD-SURE Monitoring.
