Laura,
Multiple myeloma affects the kidneys. Kidneys affect the heart, the heart affects the lungs. Pneumonia can be next. I hope your appointment is soon. Weigh yourself every day. I remember when I was taking care of my parents, Hospice said if you go up 3 lbs in one day, call the doctor. When stomachs extend with too much fluid, it presses on the lungs and makes breathing difficult. Take this seriously.

Yes, myeloma can cause fluid retention, and sudden weight gain combined with breathing trouble is something to take seriously — please reach out to your doctor as soon as possible.
There are a few myeloma-related reasons this could be happening:
- Abnormal proteins produced by myeloma cells can cause fluid to build up in the body
- Abnormal free light chains (another type of protein) can also contribute to swelling and fluid retention
- Corticosteroids (steroids), commonly used in myeloma treatment, can cause water retention and weight gain
- Kidney problems related to myeloma can cause fluid to build up in the lungs, leading to shortness of breath
- Anemia, which is very common in myeloma, reduces oxygen-carrying red blood cells and can make breathing feel difficult Because both sudden weight gain and breathing difficulties can have several causes tied to myeloma — some of which can be serious — it's really important not to wait on this one. Contact your care team right away so they can identify what's driving these symptoms and adjust your treatment or management plan if needed.
