Members responded to a question about extreme sleepiness at 87 with myeloma, with many confirming that this kind of fatigue is very common, often causing people to fall asleep mid-activity for hours at a time. Several members shared that low-dose Ritalin has helped manage fatigue and was even recommended by palliative care teams, while others found that light exercise, diet changes, and melatonin helped with related issues like neuropathy and sleep. A recurring theme was the importance of discussing options with a doctor, as members encouraged each other to bring up these strategies at upcoming appointments.

Thanks but I just checked it’s side effects listed:

Carbamazepine can cause a variety of side effects. The most frequently reported include:
Dizziness
Tiredness
Dry mouth
Nausea

Serious Side Effects
In addition to common side effects, carbamazepine may lead to more serious health issues, such as:
Severe skin reactions (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
Blood problems (e.g., decreased blood cell counts)
Mood changes, potentially serious.

+++

These are in the class of side effects that Gabapentin, Cymbalta and Lyrica all have. Early on, from 2021 through into late 2022, I had tried all of these, one at a time. Lyrica was the worst.

There’s an added benefit to Ritalin. It raises the brain DHEA, which is a very important hormone that we lose as we age. I had mine tested (simple blood test) and it was at a good level, requiring no supplementation.

I also found that Revlimid (and possibly others) reduces our DHEA. When I mentioned this to my Onc., he was aware of this but not that Ritalin helped to improve its level.

Get low dose Ritalin
5mg or 10mg, 2x or 3x daily
I’ve been taking it for years.

Originally at 10mg 3x daily while I was in Treatment and receiving pain meds for my neuropathy and then just 5mg 2x or 3x, as needed for the last 2+ years

Dear Pbaldini
I think there has been some confusion with my original post where I asked about sleeping. Larry helpfully replied and recommended Ritalin.
I then noticed that someone had mentioned severe peripheral neuropathy and I told about. a treatment that my friend used. I did not mean it as an alternative to Ritalin.
Back to carbamazepine my late friend was a consultant in HIV aids and many patients had peripheral neuropathy which had some good results when treated with carbamazepine(which I think is usually given for epilepsy) she later developed peripheral neuropathy herself and decided to try the treatment she had used on her patients. It changed her life her pain went completely.
The reason I mentioned to speak to your medical consultant is because it needs to be prescribed and of course it may not work for everyone. I mentioned it just in case it can help somebody.Xxx

@A MyMyelomaTeam Member,
Interesting. A friend told me gluten can aggravate my hip pain. She was right. My feet are burning right now and feel like they are swollen on the borrow, but they are not. Hands are burning too. I’m still taking Nutritional Yeast in the morning, but should probably take it more.

@A MyMyelomaTeam Member,

If anything has helped - time, supplements, exercise, quality organic foods.

That said, late at night I still have times where my fingers sting beyond a point of tolerance. In this case, not even my Micelle Curcumin (which greatly helps with my soft tissue injuries - too much golfing) and no help from OTC Tylenol.

When needed (still two or three times weekly), I take 60mg Natrol Quick Dissolve Melatonin (under the tongue). This provides me almost instant relief. The stinging stops and I easily fall asleep.

I’ve been doing this for a few years now. I’m sure I’ve built up a tolerance to this much melatonin. Some mornings I’m a little groggy. Both a morning coffee and a 5mg Ritalin, completely shakes off any lingering from the melatonin.

I basically have permanent nerve damage from Treatments from 2021. I never had any of this prior to Treatments.

I’m always looking for ways to improve this but I’m sure things like Nerve Pain Meds (GABA, etc) and Opiates are Not a Solution.

I’ve managed to make this an Annoyance but not a hindrance, yet I’m not as stable on my feet as I prefer but I’m fine.

One repeatable observation - after dinner carbs really aggravates the stinging in my hands and feet (more so in my hands). I was drinking organic Beet Juice with my organic Pomegranate Juice with dinner. The Pom Juice is fine but the Beet Juice causes a real problem.

Even a tiny dish of an ice cream that only has coconut sugar will cause my fingers to sting if I eat it too late.
