Has your spouse's newly diagnosed multiple myeloma caused severe bloody diarrhea, and what might be behind it?

First and most importantly β€” bloody diarrhea is a serious symptom that needs immediate medical attention. Please contact their oncologist or go to the emergency room right away if this hasn't been done already. Diarrhea is common with myeloma, and there are several possible causes worth discussing with the medical team:

- High calcium levels (hypercalcemia) β€” myeloma can cause calcium to be released from bones into the blood, which can trigger diarrhea in some cases
- Treatment side effects β€” chemotherapy drugs, particularly Revlimid (lenalidomide), are well known for causing diarrhea
- Kidney involvement β€” myeloma can affect kidney function, which may contribute to digestive issues
- Medications β€” drugs like dexamethasone and corticosteroids can also affect the bowel

The "bloody" aspect specifically is what makes this urgent, as it goes beyond typical myeloma-related diarrhea and needs prompt evaluation.

Other MyMyelomaTeam members have shared experiences with severe diarrhea β€” one member was hospitalized for 8 days due to diarrhea and dehydration linked to their treatment.

Please don't wait on this one β€” reach out to the care team today. πŸ’™

Hearing all this was not easy for me. It made me emotional because it feels like one thing after another. But at the same time, I am thankful that I am already under medical care and the doctors are taking steps to find out exactly what
