Naomi, your apprehension is palatable!! And honestly, do I feel for you! This is a no joke kinda situation, and it’s scary as hell! I do hope you find a good supportive care team, sometimes they can pair you with someone who has experienced MM and what you may be going through. I went through a lot of oncology therapy when I was first diagnosed, social worker set it up.
I chose to enter a clinical trial at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center, and had excellent supportive care during my treatment. They still follow up with me every 6 months 15 yrs later!! When hope is all you have left, small wins are a big thing. You’ll find a lot of confusing information, swallow what makes sense, spit out the rest! We’re here for you!!

That's a really understandable fear, and it's okay to ask it. The honest answer is that myeloma affects everyone differently, and there's no single timeline that applies to all.
The good news is that survival rates have been improving steadily over the past two decades, thanks to newer and more effective treatments. Data shows that around 62% of people with myeloma are still alive five years after diagnosis — and that number is likely even better for people diagnosed today. Several factors influence how myeloma progresses, including:
- Stage at diagnosis — earlier stages generally have better outcomes
- Age and overall health
- How well the myeloma responds to treatment
- Genetic features of the myeloma cells
It's also worth knowing that some people live 20 years or more with myeloma, especially those who respond well to treatment and achieve remission. The most important step is having an open conversation with your care team about your specific situation. They can give you a much more personalised picture based on your stage, test results, and treatment plan. You don't have to face these questions alone.
