Zoledronic acid (Zometa) serves a different purpose from VRd. VRd directly treats the multiple myeloma, while zoledronic acid is a bisphosphonate that helps protect bones from the damage myeloma can cause. It slows the breakdown of bone and can reduce the risk of fractures, vertebral compression, high calcium levels, and other skeletal complications.
It’s especially useful when myeloma has caused bone lesions or other bone damage. Kidney function needs to be monitored because zoledronic acid can affect the kidneys, and good dental care is important because of the uncommon but serious risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw.
So although it is given alongside anti-myeloma treatment such as VRd, its primary role is protecting the skeleton from myeloma-related bone disease.
