Do people that have kidney issues, get muscle spasms
What do you do to relieve the pain.my brain injury involves my hypothalamus. So I make plenty of ADH yet my hypothalamus does not tell my kidneys to use the ADH. So I have argine vasopressor dysfunction ( diabetes insipidius) so I have many electrolyte Imbalances. Not just calcium
Any suggestions. Wish my nephrologist would help but he just says to talk with hematologist oncologist who refers me to my endocrinologist who refers me to my… read more
Paula, Tina, renal patients have high calcium from kidney failure which cause parathyroid dysfunction. Renal patients have to follow the orders of their nephrologist. They do sometimes needs calcium supplements, but often they need calcium binders to get their calcium down. Tina, I hope your doctors start communicating so you know what's going on.
Oh no, @A MyMyelomaTeam Member. I can’t imagine your ring around the doctor life at this point. As I now enter this MM space, I’m sensing how we may get passed around. I’m grateful that my first appointment with a nephrologist resulted in referral to Hematologist/oncologist, close associates. Their offices spaces were literally next door to each other. My case was initially complicated by my recovery from a “broken back” - fractured T12 in November 2025 - while out on my regular fitness walk. It took 6 weeks to finally get an MRI after x-rays and cat scan didn’t pick it up. As soon as it was, I was put in a TLSO by the incompetent PA who treated me, or medicated me, for 6 weeks, saying just muscle spasms. I could write a book about this!
I didn’t see the nephrologist until I was cleared by my orthopedic doctor, I finally had to see a doc after a month in the back brace. He ordered another MRI after 3 months - he said the fractures healed. I actually fractured my L2 as well. So initially my blood work hinted at MM, then oncologist ordered more, they consulted and discussed what tests to confirm. They also consulted with their practices MM specialist. He said it would be rare for a bone to heal if it was MM. So that added to the difficulty in being diagnosed. I love how they consulted not only with him, but called the radiologist to review my MRI and full body Pet Scan, and even called my orthopedic doctor. Sadly, I couldn’t travel the 4 hours round trip for treatments. Although he assured me treatments would be less than an hour….So far, my first treatment was 3:30, second was 3 and yesterday my third was 2:15! They claim it depends on how quickly my meds are mixed….
Meanwhile, I pulled an abdominal muscle on June 9. So then saw a RNP, my doc was unavailable. She said she’d refer me to a surgeon or gastroenterologist. So I began to see ring around the doctors! At least the health care system I’m in has MyChart so all the docs I see can now see all my records. Only the orthopedic doctor isn’t - meaning I never could read the x-ray reports! That group has a monopoly on orthopedic matters.
Anyway, it’s teaching me to be more aggressive in seeking care outside of MM - while that has to be considered!

I pray you and your husband can figure out how to maneuver your health care!

Tina,
Muscles spasms in my back, restless legs and terrible cramping in my feet and calves were my first signs something was wrong. Calcium, magnesium, D3 and K2 have taken all that pain away. The D3 and K2 have brought my blood calcium numbers down. I also stopped eating salty foods, stopped drinking caffeinated beverages, or carbonated drinks. All of these unhealthy foods and drinks, pull calcium out of the bones and muscles. Now I always look to see how much sodium is in something before I purchase it.

Yes, high calcium levels (hypercalcemia) and kidney issues related to myeloma can absolutely cause muscle spasms and cramping. With myeloma, bones weaken and release calcium into the blood, and the kidneys — already stressed by myeloma proteins — struggle to clear the excess. This can lead to muscle twitching, cramping, and Show Full Answer
