I had undetectable Kappa light chains and Lambda light chains of over 2,000. That made it Lambda light chains MM. After 3 months of treatment the numbers went back to normal and have stayed there going on 2 years. I am asymptomatic and handling maintenance well. Maybe be off all maintenance drugs soon. Everyone responds different to treatment and they don't know why. I was given 18 months to live and they wanted me to do an SCT which I refused.

A high Immunoglobulin Kappa Free Light Chain level means that plasma cells are producing more kappa light chain proteins than the body needs. Normally, light chains pair up with heavy chains to form complete antibodies, but the extras — called "free" light chains — float around in the blood.

A high Immunoglobulin Kappa Free Light Chain level means that plasma cells are producing more kappa light chain proteins than the body needs. Normally, light chains pair up with heavy chains to form complete antibodies, but the extras — called "free" light chains — float around in the blood.
In myeloma, cancerous plasma cells often overproduce these free light chains. When there are significantly more kappa free light chains compared to lambda free light chains, it can indicate active myeloma or signal how aggressive the disease may be. Here's why this number matters for myeloma management:
- Disease activity: Elevated kappa free light chains can suggest myeloma cells are actively multiplying
- Prognosis: A high serum free light chain score is associated with a less favorable outlook
- Monitoring: Levels are tracked over time to see if treatment is working or if the disease is progressing
- Kidney risk: Free light chains can be hard on the kidneys, so elevated levels are watched closely
It's always worth discussing any changes in this number with a specialist, as they'll look at it alongside other test results to get the full picture.
