Outdoors? Last night I got a sore throat. Sick today. I’ve only been to the grocery store and wipe my hands afterwards. I haven’t started wearing masks again, but I’ve been sick 3 times since February. Usually I’m sick once every 3 years. If this keeps up, I’m wearing masks again.

Fall/Winter of 2024 I noticed that I was getting one cold after another. When I mentioned to my doctor they tested my antibodies and my IgG was very low. So I get infusions monthly. Other than that I'm mindful of whom I'm arround and try to avoid large crowds.

Started getting revaccinated on 01/25, the basic CDC vaccines, I only have the MMR left, which I will get in 06/26 (two years post-SCT/BMT). Curiously enough, the Covid vaccine was not on the list. Doc said that would be my choice. I wish it would have been my choice when I got it in 08/21. I had no choice, as I worked in a NYS building and it was mandated anyone working in a NYS facility would be required to get the Covid vax. I wish I could prove that the Covid vaccination brought upon the multiple myeloma. If the flu shot is optional, so should the Covid shot been optional. Those with severe underlying conditions were best served getting the Covid vax. Prior to myeloma, I never got a flu shot, ever!

How can you live your best life while being immunocompromised with myeloma?

Living well while immunocompromised involves balancing protection with quality of life. Here are key strategies:

Prioritize Your Health Care
- Get the best medical care possible and follow your doctor's instructions carefully
- Take all prescribed medications as directed
- Stay up to date with vaccinations, including additional COVID-19 doses if recommended

Practice Smart Hygiene
- Wash hands thoroughly after using the bathroom, before eating, and after being in public
- Use alcohol-based sanitizer when you can't wash hands
- Wear a mask in crowded spaces
- Avoid people who are sick

Stay Active and Engaged
- Continue activities you enjoy with modifications (like chair yoga or water aerobics instead of regular exercise)
- Exercise regularly - even walking helps
- Maintain social connections with family and friends who provide support

Focus on Nutrition and Self-Care
- Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables
- Stay hydrated - aim for 64 ounces of water daily
- Get 6-8 hours of sleep
- Consider vitamins after discussing with your doctor

Maintain a Positive Outlook
- Practice gratitude through journaling or writing thank-you notes
- Stay organized with medication reminders and appointment schedules
- Address financial concerns proactively

As one MyMyelomaTeam member shared, having myeloma can actually bring focus to "family, friends, and living each day to its fullest."
