I had thrush once and was prescribed oral Flagyl tablets. These worked well, and I was glad to get them as oral Nystatin liquid is one of the grossest medicines there is out there. But, it works!

Nystatin was my cure twice. Worked great. One time they admitted me for thrush but Nystatin fixed me up

My doctor has me using Fluconazole as needed. Also brush your teeth before bed. Use a tongue scraper and Swish mouth with Nystatin. That has been my go to.

How can you manage recurring oral thrush while living with myeloma?

Oral thrush can be a frustrating side effect of myeloma treatment, particularly when taking steroids. One preventive approach is taking antifungal medications under your doctor's direction before starting steroid therapy, which may help prevent oral thrush from developing in the first place.

If you're already experiencing oral thrush, talk with your healthcare team about treatment options. Many members have found relief using a special mouthwash (often called "magic mouthwash") that helps with mouth sores and oral discomfort.

Since oral thrush is part of a broader category of mouth problems that can occur during cancer treatment, maintaining good oral hygiene and staying in close communication with both your oncologist and dentist is important. They can work together to address these issues and adjust your treatment plan if needed.

Don't hesitate to report any mouth symptoms to your care team right away, as early intervention can make a significant difference in managing these side effects.
