Effective supplements for pain management often target inflammation and joint health, with top options including Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil), turmeric (curcumin), and magnesium. Other common, evidence-based choices for chronic, joint, or nerve pain include glucosamine, chondroitin, Boswellia, and Vitamin D3

Interesting how my oncologist told me not to take any calcium supplements because it can cause heart attacks. I watch my calcium levels which are always 9.5 of higher now and I always take K1/K2 but I find calcium is in a lot of foods I eat and with mm excess calcium is being released into the blood so not sure what to think on taking more calcium supplements.

Avemar. Wheat germ extract. I haven’t tried it yet but will soon. Curcumin, calcium, D3 & K2 work for me for now.

What supplements might help with myeloma-related pain?

For pain related to myeloma, several supplements have been mentioned by members and in research:

Vitamin D can help reduce the risk of bone fractures and associated pain. Since myeloma affects bones, maintaining adequate vitamin D levels is important.

Vitamin B Complex (especially B12) is commonly used for nerve pain (neuropathy). Many MyMyelomaTeam members report that B vitamins helped reduce numbness and nerve discomfort from treatment side effects.

Magnesium can help with muscle cramps and spasms, which some people with myeloma experience. It's often recommended by doctors for nighttime leg cramps.

Curcumin (from turmeric) is being studied for its potential to slow disease progression in precursor conditions, though there isn't yet enough evidence to recommend it routinely.

CBD oil has helped some members manage severe pain when other medications haven't worked, though you should check local laws and discuss with your doctor first. Important cautions:

Always consult your doctor before starting any supplement. Some can interact with myeloma treatments or cause unwanted side effects. This is especially important because:

- Some supplements may interfere with your medications
- Certain supplements should be avoided before stem cell transplants
- Your kidney function may be affected by myeloma, which impacts how your body processes supplements

Supplements work best as part of a comprehensive pain management plan alongside your prescribed myeloma treatment.

Angie,
After being diagnosed in 2020 my blood calcium was above normal. Now that I take calcium, Magnesium, D3, K2, Vitamins A,C and E complex, my number is in the mid range and normal. D3 helps you absorb calcium, K2 helps it go to your bones, Vitamin C helps it work better. Vitamin A is for the immune system and Vitamin E complex helps my blood not get too thick. It works like a blood thinner, getting oxygen to more parts of your body. I think when I started taking D3 & K2 twice a day is when I started seeing improvement in my blood tests.
