The first time was for 2 1/2 months and the BRAT diet wasn’t helping. Recently it returned for 1 1/2 weeks, and I remembered what I used to stop it. Activated Charcoal! It worked after only 3 capsules. I can’t take Imodium or Kaopectate.

Members shared a wide range of digestive issues related to smoldering multiple myeloma and treatments, with several finding relief through practical remedies like Nana Flakes (dried banana flakes mixed with yogurt), Cholestyramine mixed in applesauce, activated charcoal, and Lactaid pills for those who developed lactose intolerance. Many members described cycling between diarrhea and constipation, often triggered by maintenance medications like Lenalidomide, food sensitivities, stress, or eating out, with some recommending prescription options like Lomotil when over-the-counter remedies stop working. A recurring theme was the importance of listening to your body, tracking patterns with diet and medication timing, consulting doctors about persistent symptoms, and finding humor and solidarity in the unpredictable nature of living with myeloma-related digestive challenges.

Oddly enough myeloma had helped me to stop taking metamucil for that reason...😉🤣

@A MyMyelomaTeam Member,
I don’t know if your grocery store has Acidophilus milk, but that should help. It’s good for the immune system too.

Hi Pbaldini 🌹. Paula
🌿

You’re definitely not alone in this. Even with Smoldering Multiple Myeloma, some of us notice strange digestive issues that come and go. It’s frustrating when the BRAT diet doesn’t even help especially when it lasts weeks or months.

I’m glad you found something that worked for you. Activated charcoal can sometimes calm things down by binding irritants in the gut. Just a gentle reminder for everyone reading this it can also bind medications and supplements, so it’s important to space it out from other meds.

Sometimes diarrhea in SMM patients isn’t directly from the smoldering disease itself but from:

Stress on the bodyChanges in immune balance Mild infections
Food sensitivities that suddenly appear

If it keeps returning, it may be worth asking your doctor about:
Stool testing
Checking light chains
Screening for inflammation or malabsorption
Making sure there are no signs of early amyloidosis

Persistent diarrhea shouldn’t be brushed off, especially if there’s weight loss, fatigue, or dehydration.

But I really appreciate you sharing what worked for you. Sometimes our lived experience helps someone else who’s struggling quietly.

We learn from each other here. Stay strong

I did have Influenza A for a few weeks in January. It was nasty. High temp. I hadn’t been sick for 3 years. Thank God! And I never want to be sick again!

I should have added earlier, I also seem to have become lactose intolerant--from the meds? Who knows. But now I also use Lactaid milk and take a lactaid pill before I eat dairy. It really has seemed to help.
