How can someone manage sexual problems related to myeloma treatments?
You're definitely not alone in experiencing this. Sexual problems are a real side effect of myeloma treatments, but they're often not discussed as openly as other issues. Many people with myeloma face challenges with intimacy due to fatigue, nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy), hormonal changes, or the emotional toll of treatment.
Here are some ways to address this:
- Talk openly with your oncology team about what you're experiencing. They may be able to adjust medications or suggest treatments to help
- Consider asking for a referral to a specialist who can address these specific concerns
- Manage side effects that impact intimacy, like fatigue and pain, through your treatment plan
- Seek support from a therapist who specializes in cancer care, as emotional and mental health significantly affect sexual health
- Connect with your partner about how you're feeling and what support you need
The emotional burden of myeloma, anxiety, and depression can also affect sexual health. Addressing your mental health through counseling, support groups, or medication can make a real difference in your overall quality of life, including intimacy.
Don't hesitate to bring this up with your healthcare team. It's an important part of your well-being.

Well I guess I am out on this one. I was diagnosed 14 years ago under went stem cell chemo, radiation for 7 years and 7 years off. My husband decided he didnt want to engage in sexual activities. So we haven't and he wouldn't discuss either. We are now getting divorced.

It is something not discussed. My wife wants to pretend nothing has changed , even when it's obvious almost everything in my life has already changed
