When my husband had to have a tooth removed , we consulted with a dental specialist. He was very aware of myeloma and he did the extraction and followed up with him later.

Well, I haven't told my dentist I have MM, but I haven't done any very intrusive work. Cleanings, xrays and 2 replaced crowns. I guess if I needed to do an extraction or implant I would have no choice. Probably my dentist wouldn't be able to do it and I would need a specialist.

How can you find a dentist experienced with myeloma patients?

Finding the right dentist starts with communication between your healthcare team. It's important to have your oncologist and dentist speak with each other about your specific needs, as most dentists don't regularly see people with myeloma and may not be familiar with the unique risks involved.

Here are steps to help you find the right dental care:

* Ask your oncologist for referrals to dentists who have experience treating cancer patients
* Contact the cancer center where you receive treatment - they may have resources or connections to dentists familiar with myeloma
* When meeting with a potential dentist, explain your condition and ensure they're willing to coordinate with your oncology team
* Make sure they understand the importance of checking with your oncologist before any invasive dental procedures, especially if you're on bisphosphonates or denosumab

Once you find a dentist who understands your needs, they can become a key part of your care team. Regular cleanings and checkups are essential for catching dental issues early and preventing serious problems like osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Building a relationship of mutual trust with all your healthcare providers, including your dentist, is critical for your overall health management.
