What's the difference between Smoldering Multiple Myeloma (SMM) and Stage 1 Multiple Myeloma?

SMM is considered a precancerous condition that can lead to active multiple myeloma. While people with SMM have higher levels of abnormal plasma cells and M protein than normal, they don't experience symptoms or organ damage. SMM is sometimes viewed as multiple myeloma that hasn't yet become active or caused symptoms. The risk of SMM progressing to active multiple myeloma changes over time:

• First 5 years: 10% risk per year
• Years 5-10: 3% risk per year
• After 10 years: 1.5% risk per year

Early treatment may be recommended for "high-risk" SMM cases, particularly when there are high levels of serum M protein in the blood. Regular monitoring and follow-up testing is essential for people with SMM to catch any progression early.
