Would love to hear from anyone who started (or didn’t) treatment, even though you had no symptoms and felt great. I asked because my wife is 77, feels great and has no symptoms. She has high lambda light chains, increasing, and RBC and hemoglobin have just started to dip a bit. She’s likely headed to treatment at some point, but it seems extremely counterintuitive to start any earlier than absolutely necessary when the possible likely side effects will have a significant impact on quality of… read more
I was diagnosed with high risk Lambda light chains MM in March '24 at age 67. I started treatment immediately with no side effects. Was being pushed in an SCT but turned it down because I also was asymptomatic and quality of life was more important than longevity. I reached remission in August '24 and have remained there. Maintenance has lowered my amount of treatment. I would not recommend not doing treatment ASAP, untreated MM can take you down quickly. Good luck in your decision making.
Talk to Doctors. There are all kinds of treatments that can be done.
There are lots of things that can happen with Multiple Myeloma, like brittle bones, anemia.
It could be that getting treatment now is the best course.
But talk over with Hematologist for best answers.
Good Luck!!
I started with MGUS and now am Smoldering. I am trying to eat super healthy , and when I do for 3 months, my blood work improves. When I don’t eat healthy, my blood work gets worse. So I have learned to feed my immune system food that strengthens it. I feed my bones calcium, magnesium, D3, K2 and collagen. I don’t react well to drugs. I have 2 genes that do allow me to metabolize drugs, and the. They become toxic. At this point, I do not want to be treated. I watched my mom suffer through. Anger treatment for ovarian cancer. It was brutal, until she stopped taking chemo. Then she had quality of life. My cousin who has had MM for a long time, saw co-workers who either got MM or Leukemia and after chemo and radiation, they all died. He just said no to radiation. Recently started taking immunotherapy and is feeling good. Still gets tired easily.
@A MyMyelomaTeam Member has an interesting story. If you click on his name, it will take you to his page. Also,
Dr Brandy who has MM wrote a book called “Beat Back Cancer Naturally.” I highly recommend it.

I concur. Start as soon as your doc wants suggests!
This is a thoughtful question about balancing quality of life with treatment timing. While treatment decisions are ultimately personal choices, it's important to understand that myeloma typically requires continuous therapy once started. The key is having regular discussions with your healthcare team about what to expect Show Full Answer
