Multiple myeloma is actually not typically described as "localized" since it is, by its nature, a systemic blood cancer that affects the bone marrow and bloodstream throughout the body. Unlike solid tumors, multiple myeloma is generally widespread when diagnosed.

The staging of multiple myeloma is determined by different factors than other cancers, including:
• Bone damage
• Levels of beta-2 microglobulin (B2M)
• Presence of abnormal protein levels Doctors diagnose multiple myeloma when a bone marrow biopsy shows 10 percent or more abnormal plasma cells. The diagnosis may also involve checking for signs of organ damage such as:
• High calcium levels in blood
• Decreased kidney function
• Anemia
• Bone lesions visible on imaging tests
