I am Smoldering too. Some Smolder for years and others progress to MM. I am trying to slow the progression, by a Mediterranean diet and supplements.

The progression from smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) to active myeloma varies for each person, but here are the general statistics:

• First 5 years after diagnosis: About 10% of people develop active myeloma each year
• 5-10 years after diagnosis: About 3% develop active myeloma each year
• After 10 years: About 1% develop active myeloma each year Several risk factors can influence how quickly SMM might progress to active myeloma:

• Specific plasma cell gene changes
• High numbers of plasma cells in bone marrow
• High levels of M protein
• Increasing M protein levels over time
• M protein made from IgA heavy chain (versus IgG)
• Presence of bone lesions

Regular monitoring through follow-up visits and testing helps catch any progression early. Your healthcare team will watch these factors closely to determine your individual risk level.
