Diarrhea is one of the most challenging side effects of myeloma treatment and can be severe enough to require treatment changes. Some MyMyelomaTeam members have found success with different medication combinations:
• Loperamide (Imodium) - either alone or at reduced doses
• Cholestyramine (Prevalite, Questran Light)
• Some members have reported success combining half a dose of Imodium with cholestyramine split into two daily doses Important considerations:
• Always consult with your mother's oncologist before starting any new medications, including over-the-counter options
• Keep track of foods that may trigger symptoms using a food diary
• Ensure she stays well hydrated with 8-12 cups of room temperature fluids daily
• Consider asking her doctor about bile acid sequestrants (BAS) if other treatments aren't working
If diarrhea remains severe, her doctor might need to adjust her treatment plan or dosage to help manage this side effect.
