Sep ‘24 had a cough that lasted 24/7. Finally went to urgent care and doctor said that I had bronchitis and prescribed antibiotics (no X-ray recommended). Cough didn’t improve, told oncologist at my 3 mon visit back in Sep ‘24 about my dx and cough. She asked me if anyone requested an X-ray. That was the first dropped ball. Called my primary care provider and at first she said it takes time for the antibiotics to work. 2nd dropped ball. I called my pcp back a week later and demanded a chest X-ray be done. Guess what they found small lung masses. Then pcp requested CT scan (Oct ‘24) it showed pneumonia and based on results referred me to a quack pulmonologist. Went to the hospital for painful breathing Nov ‘24 and another CT scan performed and lung masses grew. Requested a new pulmonologist but didn’t see her until January’25. Unfortunately, started having bloody phlegm Dec ‘24. With all that is happening, new doctor requested a full body PET scan Feb ‘25 and had a bronchoscopy. Bronch test showed a lung infection but the PET scan doesn’t know the difference between cancer or infection because my entire chest area lit up. The only good news is that I didn’t have any tumors or have any metastasis from the mm. I was then referred to a radiologist for a lung biopsy who also requested another ct scan. Of course I was scared, blood pressure skyrocketed, and I started stress eating. Mind you, this coughing has been ongoing since September. I have been on every antibiotic there is for pneumonia. Please get your cough looked at and advocate for yourself if you have too.

A persistent cough can be concerning and uncomfortable. While cough medicine and muscle relaxers may provide temporary relief, it's important to discuss these ongoing breathing symptoms with your healthcare team, as they could be related to your myeloma or its treatments.

When experiencing breathing difficulties, try propping your head up with pillows while lying down so you're almost in a sitting position. When seated, sit upright and lean forward slightly with your arms resting on a solid surface in front of you. Some MyMyelomaTeam members have reported that breathing issues can be related to anemia, which is common with myeloma. Your doctor can evaluate whether this might be contributing to your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatments or adjustments to your current care plan.

Given that your cough has persisted for 6-7 months, it's particularly important to have your doctor evaluate these symptoms to ensure you're receiving the most effective treatment for your specific situation.
