My oncologist ordered this test and I don’t know why. I will be checking with him. But has anyone had this test and know why its done?

I have been getting this test but their machine is broken so I just need to have my blood drawn somewhere else. Seems like an important machine for an oncologist to have. This is a great question. Hopefully I can shed some additional light on this topic beyond what was covered by the team administration. My hematologist/oncologist orders a SPEP (serum protein electrophoresis test) at least once a quarter. It checks for my M-Spike protein levels in my blood. It typically takes at least 5 days to complete the test following the day your blood is drawn. (Sometimes even 7 days). They subject the blood to an electric current to see if it forms any “bands.” (It is subjected to the current for the above stated amount of time - 5 to 7 days). If it does show a band, that indicates there are active myeloma cells somewhere within your body shedding these M-Spikes (M-proteins). The laboratory typically grades the band and measures the amount of M-Spike protein if it is high enough. The ideal results are that there are no “bands” and no measurable amount of the M-Spike protein present.
I’ve been in complete remission for 2 years, and my oncologist/hematologist still orders the SPEP test completed once a quarter I’m very glad she is so stringent about this testing ! I wish you the best of luck with your test. God bless !

Electrophoresis is a laboratory technique that separates and analyzes proteins in a blood sample. It is used to diagnose various conditions by identifying abnormal protein levels or patterns.
Types of Electrophoresis Blood Tests:
Serum Protein Electrophoresis (SPEP): Measures the different types of proteins in the blood serum, including albumin, globulins, and antibodies.
Hemoglobin Electrophoresis: Analyzes the different types of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.

Procedure:

Low albumin levels may suggest kidney disease or malnutrition.
High globulin levels may indicate an infection or multiple myeloma.
Abnormal hemoglobin levels may indicate sickle cell anemia or other blood disorders.
