Kappa Light Chain MM
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

My SPEP after 8 months induction therapy says that there is no paraprotein detected, but it shows above normal alpha 1 fraction and alpha 2 fraction percent so I’m pretty sure I’m not in “remission”. Is paraprotein the same as M spike? Is it correct that light chain MM may not show M sspike at all?

Hi Dawn,
I can only offer some testimony based upon my own experience over the last 3 years. I believe any sign of M-Protein with the electrophoresis tests on blood serum would indicate that multiple myeloma is active to some degree. My oncologist considers it to not be in full remission even if the electrophoresis test just shows a”band” on monoclonal protein (M-Spike) although it cannot be measured by that test. The kappa/lambda light chain test is less important in determining your remission status than the electrophoresis tests of blood serum and urine. Again, just my testimony based upon my experiences over the last 3 years.

Thank you, @A MyMyelomaTeam Member Paula! I am currently working on seeing an MM specialist out of Dallas. I'll update as things progress! 🤗

What’s strange is the electrophoresis test doesn’t list M spike, but paraprotein which the test said none detected. Thanks. I see my oncologist next week to go over tests. It’s so confusing as to which results are most important.

I am basically new to this routine. My wife and I have had to basically continue to stir the medical pot to get any sort of momentum in my treatment. We have adopted and seem to be thriving on the the Bredesen protocol for the past four months with positive (subjective) results. I will be seeing a cancer specialist tomorrow and will see what his approach is.

Questions: Does insurance usually over the costs of MM treatment? I am in early stage with a definitive dx of MM but am basically asymptomatic. I also have minor but definite memory issues with a dx of early Alzheimers with no increase in symptoms since my dx and rigorously following the Bredesen routine.

I feel most fortunate to have had my condition diagnosed in the early stages where there appears to be interventions that at the least can hold things at bay. I am 83 , active and still working, writing and playing music with my fabulous wife. I look at any additional time I have as a blessing
