From day 1 my oncologist has said since multiple myeloma is incurable, there are no stages. So in over 10 years of treatments, stages have not come up. I tend to trust my oncologist 100% so I don’t believe in the stages.
The only "staging" my oncologist did, was telling me I went from Smoldering Myeloma, to full blown myeloma. Otherwise, in 3 years, staging has never come up.
I have not been told what stage I am either I just know I have not been in remission since I found out I have MM so I am still here and I praise God for it
They do have staging systems for myeloma, I have read it is used for research purposes only. Myeloma is pretty much in our entire bone marrow. Emory and Northside Atlanta staged me at diagnosis. I think my high risk genetics are a much bigger predictor of how hard my myeloma has been to treat than the stage.
I was told stage 2, but some of the indicators do not fit me. Fortunately I do not have any bone lesions. I was very anemic and have stage 3b kidney failure. The Beta 2 and LDH were slightly elevated, but the free kappa light chains were 1600! I also have not broken any bones. The bone marrow showed 1q duplication (which assessed high risk) and trisomy 4 and 13. So, after 3+ years, I am stable with treatment and hoping for many more years of survival.
I was "smoldering" and then "Full Blown". Thankfully my numbers and chart show me as barely being in remission. Yet still need the weekly treatments to stay there.
