A Gowing, Tight Tummy
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

In the last few days, someone spoke about their tummy growing round and protruding. They had a name for it. I don't know who spoke about it. We have been blaming my husband's 'pregnant belly' on Dara, but if this is actually something else, we'd like to know. It bothers him quite a bit. First, he just doesn't like it! He has trouble bending over...pushes on his lungs, making it hard to breath. His clothes don't fit, I'm not a skinny girl , so I get it, but the breathing is worrisome.

Steroids! Ask to drop the dose. See an endocrinologist.

It's usually the dexamethasone that gives us the big tummy and skinny arms and legs. I felt so bloated 😥

Rita,
All my pants are now stretchy. I have boxes of pants I can’t fit into. Steroids raise the blood sugar and they affected my adrenals. I now do not have any DHEA which is the fountain of youth. I have to take a supplement.

It is hard to tell, from what! We keep thinking it is the Dara or Ninlaro or the combination of both. He has been on Dex one way or another for 6 years. The tummy thing didn't start till Dara +. He takes a diuretic for fluid build up in his legs. To the point, now that he lets me buy him jeans and pants that are made with a stretchy fabric.😉

Rita,
It could be fluid build up, but I agree with Donna, it’s probably the Dexamethasone. When I Googled Dexamethasone, Goodrx.com says it’s a “long acting corticosteroid that is about 25 times more potent (stronger) than hydrocortisone and 6 times more potent than Prednisone”. I have Cushing’s Syndrome from a high corticosteroid steroid I used for 1 1/2 years. I started feeling bad and decided to stop taking it “cold turkey “. What a mistake. With high corticosteroids you have to slowly taper off them. Using less and less. All the fat in my arms and legs went to my stomach and chest. I have significant pericardial fat around my heart. It’s hard to breathe sometimes. It affected my heart. My blood was so thick, I would not bleed. I ended up having a heart attack. Your husband should talk to his doctor asap. His Pro-time should be checked. Dexamethasone helps with tumor burden and fighting cancer, but if the side effects are causing issues, another medication can be used. I went to Mass this morning, looking 6 months pregnant.
