Stem Cell Alternatives- What’s Your Story?
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

My doctor says I’m stage two and must have high-dose chemo, then a stem cell transplant, and will not discuss other options. What have you tried?

Thank you for this. I prayed about it, and decided not to do it.

You should have a doctor that will discuss other options. They will always try to get you to do what they feel is best but you have the ultimate decision. My husband's doctors were talking stem cell treatment but he tried twice & they could never collect enough so we decided that God did not want us to go down that path. When we told the doctors what we decided they were fine with it & now my husband has been on Revlimid maintenance for about 6 months & so far is doing fine. You need to do what you feel is best for you.

We were not sure what do about the stem cell but I really wasn't for it in the beginning but once my husband could not get enough cells for a transplant, then we felt that was the answer God was leading us to. Glad you decided what was best for you. Praying all goes well with your cancer!!

My sister had the stem cell transplant at Dana Farber in Boston and in the end it didn’t really push the Myeloma back
Everyone after having the transplant, will we start chemo approximately three months later
She started her maintenance. There will be three months after the stem cell transplant with revlimid.
About five months in to the revlimid, her myeloma got pushed down and within about eight months, it was not even detectable in her blood
When we would go to the follow up, the doctor would talk about how well she was doing and I finally said that I didn’t think the stem cell transplant had done anything, but that it was really the revlimid that worked for her
At first, he was ready to deny it, but then when he looked at her labs and her history, he agreed that the stem cell transplant for her “ hadn’t done what they’d hoped it would do.”

I wouldn’t advise you against it unless you really research that more online

If you have a good oncologist, who is not just an oncologist, but who specializes in myeloma only, there should be someone who will help you make an educated decision for your best health, but also honor the way that you wanna play things

I’m in remission after 6 months of treatment. In July I’m starting on Revlimed. I’m not fond of the idea of a transplant. I’m going to try maintenance first and see how I do. All docs push the transplants but it’s your decision
