ADA Accommodation With Alternative Work Schedule For SMM
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone successfully received an alternative work schedule ADA accommodation for Smoldering Myeloma? I am repeatedly failing in my requests to alter my work schedule in order to allow me time to seek treatments that may slow the advancement of my SMM. I prefer not to sit by idly while waiting for the disease to advance. I would like some time to actively pursue potential life extending events, training, retreats, on my own reading, prayer and establish myself as a patient with the best Cancer… read more

I had a wonderful appt. with Mayo clinic doc who is suggesting he work with my local PeaceHealth oncologist and Fred Hutch hematologist. The appt. was wonderful as he said that in his experience, I had been provided some misinformation about lifespan and my expected lifespan he puts at about 10 years longer. Uh, YAY!
After hearing that I filed a complaint with the EEOC, my employer appears to be coming around and it looks like at very least I will be keeping my job and maybe there will be some accommodation. If no voluntary accommodation, I have a governmental agency who is ready to investigate my discrimination claim. The OFCCP.
Good things are coming my way. I hope to have the time in my work schedule to pursue several health retreats. Meanwhile, I could not have asked for a better health insurance company. Regence RGA has really upped their game with providing me a personal patient care navigator and a personal nurse.
My nurse Mellissa, provided me a wonderful tip.

Download the YUKA app. Use it to scan the barcode on anything that you put in your mouth or on your body. It kicks back a rating of Excellent, Good, Poor and Bad. Stay away from the poor and bad, combine that with regular exercise and you are doing well for yourself. 🤩

I was fortunate too have disability insurance from my employer so I was paid 50% of my wages for a year and half and when I returned too work I started at two hours per day for a couple weeks then four hours a day for two weeks and upping it two hours every couple weeks until I was working my full shift of twelve hours. They were really good with my return too work. Hopefully your employer gives you a better work and life schedule too enjoy the time before you are full MM and have too start treatment, good luck.

Eden, My experience was similar to yours in that I found it impossible to reconcile my treatment schedule with my work schedule. Since I was diagnosed at the age of 68, I went ahead and retired, and then found temp work in order to keep busy and generate some income. I loved my job, and would never have retired otherwise, but it turned out to be a good thing (retirement), as I found fatigue to be an increasingly challenging feature of my Myeloma journey, and I needed the energy that had fueled my career just to deal with the MM. Best of luck to you with your journey! oxo

Eden,
Do you go to Fred Hutchinson in Seattle? That’s where my mom went for ovarian cancer. They are one of the top hospitals and they have MM Specialists. Sometimes my mom would stay at my sisters house in Kirkland, instead of driving home.

Eden, I have a great regard for Mayo clinic, Minnesota. Could you possibly share what your doctor thought about treating SMM as opposed to watching and waiting for numbers to get worse?
