Looking For Anything To Help With Side Effects Of Steroids?
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi all
I am struggling with the side effects of steroids. I had to start a new treatment three weeks ago and dexamethasone was put back in the mix. I was curious if anyone finds anything helpful for the side effects? I feel the agitation, emotional lability, just a general sense of "craziness." Thanks. I will talk with my oncologist about reducing but I first need to get my labs back in order to remission numbers. Are there treatments without dexamethasone or reduced amounts? Any strength and… read more

Todd, I had to take the Dex once a week. For me getting up really early on that day, and taking the Dex right away seemed to help. If I took it later, I had difficulty sleeping that night. Initially, I was taking ten 4mg tablets once per week. When I had symptoms similar to yours, my oncologist cut me back to 5 tablets.

Hi Todd, exercise does help. Strength training can help with the muscle wasting. I took Xanax to help with anxiety. I also took Ambien to help me sleep. They put me on Prednisone for a few months. It doesn't affect the brain quite as much. Talk to your doctor about lowering the dose or a different schedule. It's a difficult drug to take. It does help to get the myeloma under control. 💗

The dexamethasone is a tough drug. I only take it once a month for 3 days with the Darzalex injection. Initially I was on 20mg dex for 2 days, day of and day after the injection, but by day 4 I would "crash" and sleep all day and just be a zombie days after. My dose was decreased to 20mg day 1, 12mg day 2 and 8mg day 3. Much more tolerable. I couldn't image taking it every day!
