Finding A Myeloma Specialist
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone had an appointment with Dr. William Matsui (UT Austin) or Dr. Robert Orlowski (MD Anderson Houston)? My PCP sent a referral to Dr. Matsui and I’ve been told they’re not accepting new patients. Frustrating since I live about 22 miles from Dr. Matsui’s office (Bastrop, Tx) and 2 1/2 hours from Dr. Orlowski. How does one go about finding a Doctor Who works in cooperation with the MD Anderson doctors?

I am a patient of Dr. Krina Patel in the same group as Dr. Orlowski. I have seen him in the hospital and he has a wonderful bedside manner. The entire team in Houston is exceptional. I suggest that you work to get an appointment with someone in the group. I’ve seen all but one of the team and would be comfortable with any of the drs.

I am a patient of Dr Manasanch at MD Anderson, moved from Washington state to Texas to be treated by there specialists. Second to none. Received sct and later car-t. Returned to Washington this year to be closer to family. I get my treatments here in Washington do telehealth but Dr Manasanch and her team at MD Anderson call the shots. She has access to all lab tests notes and everything. Monthly appointments done over phone or telehealth.

Update: My PCP has sent a referral to MD Anderson for Dr. Orlowski. I hope it doesn’t take too terribly long to get an appointment. I have lots of family and friends in the Houston area so the distance should be ok. I haven’t seen an oncologist yet but hopefully he will be able to tell me someone in my area that he could work with if necessary. My primary care doctor has been on top of things. Thankfully!

That’s a great idea. Local oncologists can follow what a specialist recommends . I’m 2 hours away from my specialist.
