Lella, My husband had osteonecrosis of the jaw after 4 Zometa treatments, but any of the bone strengtheners can do that. He was treated by an oral surgeon with rinses and antibiotics. Eventually he was referred to an oncology oral surgeon who treated him in a surgical suite by removing dead tissue and closing things up. He did loose two back teeth. He has no further problems, but he is no longer on any bone strengtheners.
You can only find cancer oral surgeons in large medical centers. These doctors deal with this every day. Most of the time this condition will not heal itself as dead bone has to be removed. If you have other questions , write back.
Hope this helps........Ava

Yes! I had a similar experience with a piece of bone like material. I thought it was a root that broke off. Dentist said it was a chunk of cement from where I had a crown done, but now I am wondering. Such pain, swelling, loose teeth in upper left back. Quiets down with steroids I take weekly. I am scared!

Yes, I have. I was fighting months with an upper gum infection. Upper right gums were swollen and in infected. Went on antibiotics three times. Dentist thought at time it was a “bad” molar causing the problem. I set up to get tooth extracted. Then a few weeks before the extraction I felt something hard inside the swollen area of the gum. With a tooth pick I pulled out a chunk of bone; it came out very easily. Weeks afterward and still before scheduled extraction my gum was still having problems so I went ahead and got the tooth extracted and now I have a brand new bridge installed over the are. No more infections for weeks now. I have posted a photo of the piece of bone that fell out. At first I thought the chunk of bone was part of the tooth but the Oral Surgeon told me no, it was part of my jaw.

@A MyMyelomaTeam Member thank you for this information, it's very helpful. The oral surgeon I saw seemed knowledgeable about this once he took history and looked in my mouth. He believed to be a minor issue and did not recommend surgery so as not to interfere with transplant which has now been pushed to January. I will speak with my MM people tomorrow about this to see what they recommend. Maybe I wanted to make the Zometa the culprit for too much. Nice to know it could be caused by Xgeva.

Best!
