Should I Have The Port Site Looked At?
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

I had my port put in yesterday.
Its covered with 4 square inches of clear tape and its so itchy it’s driving me crazy. Its also pretty red under the tape. Im allergic to very sticky band aids and now I’m wondering if i should have this taken off. I was told it has to stay on for 2 weeks.

I have the same issue! Let your doctor’s staff remove and put another type of tape that will not cause the rash. DO NOT TAKE THE COVERING OFF YOURSELF. The site is covered to protect against infection.

I think that you are probably allergic to latex adhesive. If you switch to paper tape and only use bandaids that don't have a latex adhesives you will not have to worry about an allergic reaction. You can have Tegaderm for sensitive skin or paper tape put on when they access your port. My new Cancer Center lets me use the paper tape and it's a game changer for me.
I would also suggest that any time you are having itching and redness after a procedure, to call your Doctor and take some Benadryl.

Mine came off the next day and I started treatments 2 days after they put it in. I think most like allergic reaction I would call them right away and see if you could take it off

The oncology nurse took the offending tape off me. So I only have the steri strips now and they do make me itch but nothing like before.
I’m feeling pretty good.
