First Diagnosed
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi - I developed a pain on my left side (by the rib cage & on the side) about 2 weeks ago. I went to the walk-in dr last Wednesday. They tested my urine it has a little blood & my wb count was a little elevated. They said it might a kidney stone & told me to the er for ct scan. I don’t have a kidney stone but the found lyric lesions on lumbar & thoracic vertebrae. My blood work looks good & no other unusual findings were found on the ct scan. No weight loss. My question is how long did you… read more

My husband started with severe back pain. Ended up in ER where they did a CT scan and found lots of lytic lesions. Blood work all looked normal. After many more PET scans, MRI's, CT's, he finally had a bone marrow biopsy which led to the diagnosis of "Non-secretorial Multiple Myeloma" The "Non-secretarial" part of it means that the MM proteins which normally leak into the blood and are indicated on the blood tests, are not secreting into the blood, but are damaging the bone. So, just because your blood work is normal, don't rule out MM. The only way to definitively diagnose MM is with a bone marrow biopsy. By all means, demand a bone marrow biopsy--it's an easy procedure and done in the doctor's office with mild sedation.

I was in pain in my rib cage and chest for about 3 months. As this was during the COVID period, I thought I might have COVID. I was wrong! I should have taken action sooner and had blood work done and urine screens. I didn't go to the Doctor until I had been in pain quite awhile, and I would urge you to go as soon as possible. Those bone lesions are an important sign of problems.

Lamar, Everyone is different and the disease presents in different ways. Often people put their pain off to other things, such as arthritis, etc. Everyone’s pain tolerance is different. Most everyone complains of some type of bone pain or fracture but others don’t experience bone pain at all, maybe their kidneys just shut does, it is different for everyone, that is why Myeloma is so hard to diagnose.

First diagnosed, if you have lesions in your bones, it's time to make an appointment with a Myeloma specialist. This disease has different symptoms and feeling well has no bearing .

Wow…I can relate! So did the kypho procedure helped you? I wonder if left alone the vertebrae can heal itself or not, seems the majority are helped by kyphoplasty or Vertabreaplasty tho. So confusing to choose when diff back doctors can’t agree over the issue and what course of treatment would be most effective for the broken back!
