I’m Scheduled For ASCT, But Have A Positive Epstein Barr Test.
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

I’m scared to death that this will make me ineligible for ASCT. + IGM, + IGG, + EBNA. Anyone know about this? Of course I find this on my patient portal on a Friday night!

Joette, I am sorry! I don’t know about the SCT and EBV. Epstein Bar Virus is a human herpes virus which can cause mononucleosis. They have found with Allo SCT (donor) that it is easily reactivated and can lead to Lymphoma and other cancers. There is a drug that originally treated heart failure, Spironolactone that targets the SM Protein on the EPV which is responsible for replication. The original study came from The University of Utah.
I don’t know if they are using this drug out of a Clinical Trial Study. This report was from 4 years ago.
I don’t know if a Auto SCT would be better or worse and if they now have a medication to knock the virus down if it is reactivated.
Unfortunately, you will have to wait till Monday to talk with your doctor about these results.
If you can’t have a SCT treatments can also knock your MM count into Remission.
Have you ever had mononucleosis, or told the Epstein Bar
Virus was active? About 95 % of the population has this virus but it lies dormant and is not activated. So it may not mean anything. You really will need to talk with your doctor.
Don’t worry about it until you talk with your doctor - I have this posted on my refrigerator: “Worrying does not Empty Tomorrow of it’s Troubles, It empties Today of it’s Strength!”
So True! Have a good weekend! Love, Marcia 🌼🌸🌻
