My blood test 3 months after my stem cell transplant has a high light chain number compared to normal people. A 36 as compared to my high over 2000 when diagnosed but higher than when I harvested the stem cells. The results from the bone biopsy won’t be back until next week.
Is this light chain number normal after SCT?
I meet with my oncologist next week to get his answers and our plan of action.
Thanks Bacon. I did check on the kappa light chain units so I learned something from talking with you. Not being a doctor makes it confusing to me. I also have to trust what the oncologists are doing. It is hard to not feel in control of your own health and welfare .best wishes you can sure help educate others .
I had a BMT in May. My light chains were at 300 when I had BMT. They went down to 29 after BMT. They didn’t start me on Maintenance for a couple of months. When they started I was at 30 Light chains. After 2 months on maintenance (21 days in Pomalyst and one infusion of Emplicity every 28 days) my light chains are 23.6.
I’m happy that they caught it early for you. I was near death when they diagnosed me. The most recent number for the light chain was 32 mg/dL for the free lambda with ratio of .05 kappa/lambda .
I will let everyone who is reading this know what my oncologist says next week just to pass the knowledge on. Hopefully the stem transplant team gets back to me with the answer if it’s normal for the light chain number to be high three months post transplant before then.
Bacon, pretty sure you don't need to worry about this number. Wait until you see your doctor. He will take in everything together. One number by itself means very little. Sure looks better than where you started. Hoping you get great news. Keep us posted💕
The Kappa Light Chain number I have seen doesn’t have any units such as parts per million, etc. It has been very confusing to me as well. I have always been inquisitive since I am an engineer.
I do not even know if we can compare test results without units?? I was (maybe )fortunate that they caught my MM early at s 165 Kappa Light Chain test to start and my worst Kappa number during treatment has been a 7.6. They are reducing my Velcade and Revlimid to prevent damage to my body , thyroid, and building my immune system up during Covid. There are so many blood tests that oncologists monitor so you should ask your oncologist for their input on your case. I really hate to say this should be the number and have you gravely concerned, not being dishonest. They also look at Kappa/Lambda ratio and so many other tests. I have always been tempted to self diagnose or guess. They watch my blood tests for kidney condition creatinine, calcium for bones, others for neuropathy, immunoglobulin for immune function, white and red blood cell counts., etc. and they track comprehensive blood panels.
My oncologists started to look at scheduling an SCT but are postponing the procedure due to Covid19. They are now treating me to wait for SCT until Covid is fading out in the USA. I have been in treatment over a year and a half. Dialog and trust of your oncologist is critical to success. I know it can be hard because they are not only treating our MM , but trying to help you manage your concern and spirit.
Sorry I could not be more help other than advising you to build conversation with your oncologist. Take care and keep us informed. I am in a hold pattern , very anxiously waiting for an SCT and also gravely concerned about the SCT process. How long I will be hospitalized, how ill does one get, recovery time, length of remission time, what is definition of remission? So many questions I have too.
Wishing you well soon. Make a list of questions. We all can learn from your answers too.
